Highschool should be more like Kindergarten

​Kindergarten, a place where many high school students want to be.  Some students wish they could be back in preschool because of the stress free learning environment.  In the article “What if High School were more like kindergarten?” Ashley Lamb-Sinclair talked about how many high school students are stressed out and may actually learn better in an environment with hands on experience.  She observed some kindergarten classrooms and noticed many things that she wanted to apply to her high school students.  Her main argument explained how education is important, but learning is much more important because it causes people to focus and become more intelligent while remembering the things they are taught.

One reason why learning is more effective and more important than education is because of how companies are finding that even the best students are not always the best job candidates.  Some companies are finding that they are able to hire people from schools that are not Ivy League or  hire some people who don’t even have a degree at all and these people have become job candidates.  Lamb-Sinclair Stated “[Even] Google has said that it has found no correlation between GPAs and test scores and employees who thrive, and therefore has stopped looking at those academic qualifications all together” (3).  This shows how big companies like Google are looking for people who have learned the most not the people with the best education.  If High School was more like Kindergarten students would not be as stressed allowing them to learn more and it would be more effective when they get there first job.  If education was more important than learning then these big companies would be only hiring from Ivy league schools.  This fact shows that learning causes one to become more intelligent and remember what they have been taught.

Another reason why learning is more effective is because when one is learning for the sake of learning one will become more engaged.  Many High Schoolers go to class every day and just do the work and don’t focus on what they are actually learning.  They just want to get good grades and get into a good college.  If students were more engaged and cared more about learning than education they would do better later on if life.  According to a Gallup Survey “79 percent of elementary-aged children feel engaged in school, while only 43 percent of high-schoolers do” (4).  At the age of elementary school you do fun activities to learn and this keeps more student engaged and these kids don’t care as much about their grades, they care more about learning the things they are taught.  If high schools were made to get the students engaged and taught the students to care about what they're learning, not what their education will be like.  This would help student become more intelligent and want to learn more.

In conclusion, everyone has been taught to think a certain way.  Many are taught to believe that all that matters is how well you do in school and what college you get into.  This is wrong.  Teachers should be teaching kids what really matters is what you learn.  If teachers become more engaging, their students will learn more things and even if they don’t get into the best school, they will still have a good chance of becoming a good job candidate because of the knowledge they achieved.  Now that many of these big companies are finding that the school one went to doesn't really make for the best worker.  Highschool should be more like Kindergarten.
